About the Loula V. York Branch
The Loula V. York Branch, also known as the Pahokee Library, began in 1938 as the Everglades Public Library and was housed in a local church. In 1965, U.S. Sugar gifted the city of Pahokee a municipal library building which opened as the Loula V. York Memorial Library in 1967, named in honor of a longtime teacher whose schoolhouse occupied the site. The County took over operating the 4,500 square foot library on October 1, 1989, and later acquired the building in 1992. The building was completely renovated in 2006. Situated in a city park, the branch serves all areas north to the Martin County line along with the unincorporated areas of Pahokee, Canal Point, Bryant and Pelican Lake subdivisions.
Loula V. York Branch members can also access the Glades Area Literacy Project whose mission is to offer adults assistance with reading, writing or speaking English. Materials are provided for free and lessons are designed to meet individual’s goals. For more information, contact Shelsea Estiverne at (561) 681-4074 or estivernes@pbclibrary.org.
