A Social Story, what it is and how it can help:
Social Stories were introduced in 1990 by teacher, parent and Autism advocate Carol Gray. They have become essential tools for parents, caregivers and teachers to communicate with people of all ages diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder or are Neurodivergent. You can find more information about Social Stories here: carolgraysocialstories.com
Palm Beach County Library System strives to connect, inspire and enrich all members' lives. Social Stories can assist in this mission by helping members with ASD, anxiety, memory loss and the Neurodivergent navigate the library independently. Referring to the images and simple text in the Social Story will allow these members to locate bathrooms, storytime rooms, books, and DVDs or identify a staff member for assistance. Viewing your library location's Social Story before visiting can reduce anxiety.
We hope you find the Social Stories helpful and they make your library visit more enjoyable.
