Read a Recipe for Literacy
The Palm Beach County Library System has teamed up with the Weinig Foundation and their literacy program, Read a Recipe for Literacy, to host events at various branches and the initiative is proving to be a big hit! The goal of Read a Recipe for Literacy, founded by Mary Jo Meade-Weinig, is to enhance childhood literacy and communication, for children to learn about their local environment and also build healthier lifestyles through activities that include writing, reading, crafting, art, STEM and play-based learning.
Currently, the branches hosting Read a Recipe for Literacy are:
- Belle Glade
- Clarence E. Anthony (South Bay)
- Loula V. York (Pahokee)
- Jupiter
- Lantana
- Wellington
- Okeechobee
- West Boca
Read a Recipe for Literacy has enabled us to develop innovative programs that enhance literacy and foster peer interaction among local children. These engaging activities include paper-making, nature journaling, cosplay design, food science, clay sculpting, jewelry-making, and even building a Bluetooth speaker! For instance, in a recent paper-making event, children transformed torn pieces of upcycled newspaper into their own sheets of paper. They then used this paper to write letters to family members or friends, combining creativity with meaningful communication.
The Read a Recipe for Literacy initiative has been a delightful adventure, cooking up joy and creativity, definitely a recipe for success!
