hoopla

Hoopla is a digital media service that allows you to borrow free videos, music and audiobooks from home or anywhere you have an Internet connection. Thousands of movies, television shows, audiobooks and music albums are available to borrow and instantly stream on a tablet, smartphone or computer.

  • What do I need to use hoopla?

You will need a valid Palm Beach County Library card, an email address (to create an account), and either a computer or a mobile device with Internet access.

  • How does hoopla work?

Similar to the way Netflix works, hoopla streams content in a browser (on a computer) or through the hoopla app installed on a mobile device. hoopla titles circulate for a set amount of time, and during the circulation period, you may watch or listen to the title as many times as you wish.

  • What is available?

Currently there are over 8,000 movies and TV shows, 10,000 audiobooks and 115,000 music albums to choose from. New content is added on a weekly basis.

  • How do I create a hoopla account?

    On a computer:

    1. Visit the hoopla site at http://www.hoopladigital.com
    2. Click Sign Up, and select Palm Beach County Library as your home library.
    3. Enter your library card number, leave the PIN field blank, and click Continue.

  • What devices and browsers are supported?

On a computer, hoopla works in your web browser. Currently Internet Explorer (8, 9 and 10), Google Chrome, FireFox (8 and above) and Safari are supported. Internet Explorer 11 is not supported at this time. In order to play content on your web browser, a plug-in called Widevine must be installed. Your web browser should prompt you to download this plug-in the first time you attempt to view content on your web browser. This is a one-time installation and you should not be prompted for the plug-in again.

The hoopla mobile app is supported by iOS devices that run the latest version of iOS (currently 7.1.2). This includes: iPhone 4, iPhone 4S iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, iPhone 5C, iPad 2 and newer, iPad Air, iPad Mini, and iPod Touch 5th generation and newer.

The hoopla mobile app is also available for Android smartphones and tablets. The hoopla digital app is compatible with select android devices, including most devices that support Android OS 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and above.

The hoopla digital app is also now compatible with 7" and 8.9" Kindle Fire HDX devices, but the app is not available in the Amazon App Store. It can be installed via the 3rd party app store, slideme.org (see Kindle Fire HDX installation instructions below).

At this time, hoopla is not available on game consoles, Roku, or Chromecast but please stay tuned for future enhancements.
  • How do I borrow and play titles?

You can borrow titles by downloading and signing into the mobile app or signing into the website and browsing all available content. Once you select a title you can click on the Borrow button on the title details page. Once a title is borrowed, it will be added to your My Titles list. Tap or click the Play icon on the cover of the title to begin playback.

  • How many titles may I check out?

Each card holder may checkout 12 hoopla items per calendar month. You can return titles before they expire, but doing so will not allow you to stream more than 12 titles per month. One check out consists of any of these items:

    • A movie.
    • A television episode.
    • A music album.
    • An audio book

Your checkouts will reset on the first of each month. Unused checkouts do not rollover to the next month.

  • How long do I get to keep items?
Checkout periods vary according to type of material borrowed:
    • Movies and TV episodes – 3 days (72 hours from time of checkout)
    • Music albums – 7 days (168 hours from time of checkout)
    • Audiobooks – 21 days (504 hours from time of checkout)

Items borrowed may be streamed as many times as you wish during the checkout period.

Items will check back in automatically at the end of the borrowing period so there are never any overdue fines associated with hoopla.

  • Are there waiting lists for popular titles?

No. All hoopla titles are available all the time with no waiting.

  • Do I need to be connected to the internet to access hoopla?

Yes, you must be connected to the Internet to access hoopla and to stream the content. Important note: if you are streaming on a smartphone or tablet and are NOT connected to Wi-Fi, you are accessing your cellular provider’s data plan and, therefore, paying to stream. If you are using the app on a mobile device, hoopla content can be downloaded to the app for offline viewing (see next question).

  • Can I play hoopla content on my mobile device without an internet connection?

In the hoopla mobile apps only, you can complete a temporary download to play content when an internet connection is unavailable. On iOS devices, simply tap the cloud icon on the title detail page after checking out. In the Android app the process is the same, but look for the word DOWNLOAD in the upper right hand corner. Once the download is complete, you may disconnect from the Internet and play your content from within the app.

  • Can I play hoopla content on more than one device at a time?

You can play hoopla content on several devices, but not at the same time. However, you can begin playing content on one device and pick it back up later on another device right from where you left off earlier.

  • Can a title be returned before the lending period expires?

If you have finished a title you have downloaded and want to free up space on your device, you can return the title before the lending period has expired by clicking the "Return" button on the title detail page. Please note that returning a title early does not give you additional checkouts for that month.

  • How do I install the hoopla app on the Kindle Fire HDX?

For the best results, you will want to open your browser on your Kindle Fire HDX device, type slideme.org in your URL and hit go. Install SlideMe and sign up for an account. From there you can search for hoopla within SlideMe and install the app. Click on the links for detailed instructions on installing SlideMe, or hoopla from SlideMe.

Note: You can install hoopla without installing SlideMe, but you will not be prompted when hoopla has an app update. Simply open slideme.org in your browser, search for hoopla, and download the app.
