Lights – Cameras – Action!
On the day after Thanksgiving, when most people were either recovering from their turkey dinners or battling the Black Friday shopping crowds, a film crew gathered at the Wellington Branch Library to make a movie. Local director Octavian Onuc selected the branch to film his new movie, The Novelist, a thriller about a disgruntled writer who takes a successful novelist hostage at a book signing.
The film crew arrived at 7 a.m. to set up for filming, with most of the actors arriving after 8 a.m. to prepare for their roles. The first scenes were filmed outside the library where a team of extras masquerading at the Novelist’s fans waited in line to enter the building. Then the action moved inside where the book signing and subsequent hostage taking took place. Filming concluded around 6 p.m., with final clean up by the film crew ending at 7:30 p.m.
All throughout the day, the crew and actors were very pleasant and friendly. Many of them had driven down from Orlando or up from Broward for the event. In some cases they waited all morning for a mere 20 minutes of filming in the afternoon.
With principal photography now complete, The Novelist enters post-production. This process will take several months, so we do not expect to see the final film until late Spring or early Summer. When it is ready, we plan to have Octavian Onuc come back to the library to screen the film for our patrons and take questions from the audience.
