Palm Beach County Library System Joins United We Serve Initiative

Palm Beach County Library System Joins President Obama’s Call to Service for Summer Projects

The Palm Beach County Library System is taking part in United We Serve, a national effort launched by President Obama to engage more Americans in serving their communities this summer.

On Monday, June 22, over 250 local youth provided volunteer service as part of the United We Serve’s nationwide kickoff. The Palm Beach County Library System VolunTeen program provides teens with an opportunity to become involved in the community by assisting with the Summer Reading Program.

In addition to the VolunTeen program, there are over 23 different types of volunteer jobs that the library recruits to help support and enhance library services. Last year the Library had over 1,000 volunteers who helped answer phones, shelve books and prepare for children’s activities.

“Our volunteers are essential to the Library system and in these tough economic times, we need volunteers more than ever,” said John J.Callahan, III, Library Director. “Palm Beach County Library System is facing increasing demands for services, and volunteers help us fill this growing need.  We are pleased to participate in United We Serve and thank the President for making this call to service this summer and beyond.”

Palm Beach County Library System volunteer opportunities are listed on Serve.gov and www.pbclibrary.org.  Those wishing to volunteer may also visit any library location for an application and information on additional volunteer opportunities.

United We Serve will be marked for the first time as a national day of service and remembrance.  The initiative focuses on four key areas: education, health, energy and the environment; and community renewal.  It is being led by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that improves lives and strengthens communities though volunteering and service.

To make it easy for individuals to get involved, the Corporation created Serve.gov, a website that allows visitors to type in their zip code to find local volunteer opportunities.
