Lecture: Euripides’ “Helen”

The Coen brothers’ riff on Homer’s “Odyssey” set in the South of the 1930s stars George Clooney, John Turturro, and John Goodman.  Discussion of film and text led by classics professor Mike Lippman follows the movie presentation.  A limited number of copies of Homer’s “Odyssey” available at the Check-Out desk.  (103 mins.)  Rated PG-13.

Euripides, considered one of the great tragedians of ancient Greece, wrote plays that contained an almost modern psychological perspective, focused on the nature of women, and questioned long-established myths.  Classics professor Mike Lippman brings to life an alternate view of the alluring Helen of Troy amidst a backdrop of senseless war and betrayal.  A question and answer session follows the lecture. A limited number of copies of Euripides’ “Helen” is available at the Check-Out desk. (2 hrs.)
