Commemorate World Refugee Day 2018

“I urge you to celebrate the extraordinary courage and contributions of refugees past and present."
—Kofi Annan, Seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations, 1997-2006

According to the United Nations, around 14 million people in the world are refugees. A refugee is a person who has been “forced to flee his or her country because of persecution, war, or violence... and has a well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group.”

Our state’s Refugee Services Program, part of the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF), also does tremendous work to help people affected by war, torture, or human rights violations.
