Success Starts Here - Legal Research

Legal ResearchThe library has resources to assist you with many of your legal research needs. Whether you need a form for a business contract or lease, or are researching legal precedent, you can find self-help guides, legal encyclopedias, codes, and statutes. We offer online guides to legal resources at http://www.pbclibrary.org/legal.htm. Reference librarians can also help you get started with your research, but please note that librarians cannot offer legal advice.

In addition to the resources available in your local library branch, the Library System subscribes to databases to help you with your legal needs.

Continuously updated to reflect the latest state laws, Gale LegalForms, available in library branches or from home, with your library card, offers an online collection of legal resources. Features include:

  • Editable Forms — Forms and documents available in Word format can generally be edited and used with minor modifications to suit users' needs by simply "filling in the blanks" with relevant and accurate information
  • Product descriptions — a brief overview describing what the form is used for and any applicable state law requirements
  • Law Digest — this unique module provides law summaries for all 50 states and information generally applicable to all states. Within each Law Digest entry users will find additional resources, including government organizations and their contact information, a bibliography for further research and links to related subjects
  • Legal Q & A — a collection of legal questions with answers from an attorney, arranged alphabetically, and presented in laymen's terms, so information is easily understood.

For researching Florida Case Law, library users have access to the National Law Library database, available at the Main Library.  Find current opinions or a history of case law from 1 So. (1886) through 88 So.3d (2011).

For additional assistance with legal research, contact an attorney, or ask a reference librarian for information about local self-help centers, or free and low-cost legal aid providers.

Quick Byte: Google Goggles

If you’ve ever wanted more information about a book before taking it home to read, check out Google Goggles. Goggles is a free visual search app for your mobile device that enables you to take a picture of a book cover, then analyzes and identifies it. You’ll be able to see a preview of the book and access a listing of Google search results, including reviews.
Google Goggles is useful for more than just books, though. Take a scan of a painting, image, QR code, or barcode and all the information that would show up in any Google search will be on your device. On vacation and want more information about a landmark? Snap a picture and Goggles will search the web for information. You can use it to translate text; just take a picture of something written in English, French, Italian, German, Russian, or Spanish, Portuguese, and Turkish and you’ll have the option of translating it into over 40 languages. Goggles will also scan business cards directly into your device contact list!

Google Goggles is available for both Android and iOS devices. For more information about downloading this and other apps, call the Palm Beach County Library Computer Center or your local branch for assistance. You can also register for mobile apps classes being offered at the Library Computer Center.
