Celebrate Haitian Heritage Month

The Palm Beach County Library System is proud to honor Haitian culture, history and language during Haitian Heritage Month in May, a month which incorporates the important holiday of Haitian Flag Day on May 18.

We begin the celebration on Sat, May 05, 2:30 pm at the Lantana Road Branch, with an event for the entire family. Louines Louinis Haitian Dance Theater, Inc. presents “Dance-A-Story,” an interactive storytelling performance of traditional Haitian tales with audience participation.

Visit our website for a detailed list of events being offered. Classes and events presented in English and Haitian Creole.

Quickbyte: Pepperplate

Cookbook collections are charming, but digital is taking over. According to findings from Google Consumer Surveys, most millennials prefer mobile devices to print materials in the kitchen. With the internet a practically endless source of recipes, cooking tips, and video tutorials to suit any diet, it’s not hard to see why. Now thanks to Pepperplate, collecting recipes, planning meals, and organizing shopping lists on your tablet or smartphone is easier than ever.

Pepperplate is a free app for Apple, Windows, Android and Amazon devices that helps you collect and manage an unlimited library of recipes. Add the Pepperplate bookmarklet to your browser and easily save recipes from any website to your Pepperplate collection. You can organize your recipes into custom categories, so you can see all your nut-free, gluten-free, or breakfast recipes, for example, in one place. Pepperplate also lets you plan and schedule your meals in advance. You can even add all your planned meals’ ingredients to a shopping list, then automatically arrange your items into sections like produce, canned goods and spices so you can save time at the grocery store.

Will Pepperplate convince you to give up your cherished collection of cookbooks? Probably not. But with features like multiple kitchen timers and Cook Mode, which stops your screen from dimming while you cook, you might find yourself leaving those books on the shelf next time you're in the kitchen.
