Presidents & Their First Ladies, Dramatically Speaking: John and Abigail Adams

It's hard to think about John Adams without thinking about his extraordinary wife, Abigail. As his closest advisor, Abigail is sometimes referred to as a "Founder of the United States." Their decades of correspondence, resulting in more than 1,000 letters, is an invaluable account of the Revolutionary War, the achievements and influence of the second president, and Abigail's sacrifice and influence. Together, they contributed to the birth of this nation and raised a son who would become a future president.

Veteran husband and wife acting duo, William and Sue Wills, bring the story of John and Abigail Adams to life. Their engaging performance is recommended for American history buffs, students, or any fan of a great story.

Space is limited. (60 min.) Preregistration begins Wed, Jan 03, at 10:00 am, in person, or online at:

For performance times and locations, see this month's issue of Happenings.

Writers LIVE!

Writers LIVE!, the library's flagship author event series, is back for its 10th anniversary of bringing the community together with authors and their books. 2018 boasts an impressive line-up of best-selling, critically-acclaimed, award-winning authors from a variety of genres who will discuss their latest works, chat with you, and sign books. The library has strived to make this a memorable year by providing something for nearly every reader in our area. Browse the lineup and mark your calendar with nearly half a year of literary events!

Local, independent booksellers will be selling books at every event. Purchasing a book not only supports our local economy and an author's creative achievement, but a percentage of each sale is donated back to the Friends of the Palm Beach County Library System, directly benefiting library services throughout the county. Your support is greatly appreciated!

This series is made possible through the generous support of the Friends of the Palm Beach County Library System, Inc.

You are able to preregister either in person or online at:

"I, Rigoberta Menchu: An Indian Woman in Guatemala," by Rigoberta Menchu + "Habla Con Los Labios de Silencio," by Luis González Palma

Menchu's life story, first published in 1983, reflects on the injustices experienced by Indian communities in Guatemala. Discuss her book and its relationship to Guatemalan artist Palma's photo-based portrait.

Quickbyte: LibriVox

Audiobooks are pricey. If your book of choice is on hoopla, Axis 360 or Overdrive, great! If not, you're looking at monthly fees or hefty price tags that run about double what the print or e-book versions cost. Voice talent and recording studios don't run cheap, and that bill gets passed on to listeners.

Good news: there's a free alternative. Powered by over 8,000 volunteer book readers, LibriVox offers more than 11,000 public domain audiobooks for free on LibriVox.org and the LibriVox apps for Android and iPhone. Most recordings are in English (over 20,000 titles), but their multi-language library is growing, with over 300 audiobooks in Spanish, 2,100 in German, 600 in French, 400 in Chinese, and a handful in languages like Farsi, Korean and Afrikaans.

If you want to help LibriVox grow, you can volunteer to record any public domain book in any language. There are no auditions or hoops to jump through - just sign up here, check your mic set-up, start reading aloud, and feel good about making a free resource even better.
