Healthy Mind & Body

"Scientists…have been rediscovering the links between stress and health. Today, we accept that there is a powerful mind-body connection through which emotional, mental, social, spiritual, and behavioral factors can directly affect our health. Mind-body medicine focuses on treatments that may promote health, including relaxation, hypnosis, visual imagery, meditation, yoga, and biofeedback."

Recognizing that these practices can be accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels, the Consumer Health Information Service (CHIS) is offering Healthy Mind & Body classes throughout the county.

Participants will receive a free workout towel (while supplies last), and can enter a drawing to win gift cards to Whole Foods Market. Each class is 60 minutes. Please preregister to reserve your spot.

The Healthy Mind & Body series has been made possible thanks to generous donations to the Friends of the Palm Beach County Library System, in the memory of Rachel Mick, the Palm Beach County Library System’s founding CHIS Coordinator. Rachel was recognized at local, state and national levels for her work as a Consumer Health Librarian. She passed away February 2016 following a three-year battle with breast cancer.

This series is made possible through the generous support of the Friends of the Palm Beach County Library System, Inc.

Quickbyte: Waze

Waze is a free navigation app that saves users time, money, and aggravation while on the road. It’s also a social site that relies on input from the Waze community. Powered by user reports, it offers real-time traffic information and road alerts. The app is to be used when driving, and alerts other drivers of obstacles in the road, accidents, and stopped vehicles, allowing you to plan your trip and re-route if necessary. Because reports are coming in consistently, you will get real-time information. And if you find that the report is incorrect (or no longer correct), it’s simple to report that information to other Waze users.

Users have many options to customize the app. For example, because Waze is a social app, you will receive reports of all kinds of accidents, police locations, and road issues. If that’s too much information for you, you can remove specific items from appearing on your map. Waze also has a great traffic jam estimation, plus current data about road closures.

If you are a driver who likes to avoid aggravation on the road, give Waze a try. It’s available for free for both iOS and Android devices.
