Commemorate World Refugee Day 2016

"I urge you to celebrate the extraordinary courage and contributions of refugees past and present." - Kofi Annan, Seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations, 1997-2006

According to the United Nations, almost 14 million people in the world are refugees. A refugee is a person who has been "forced to flee his or her country because of persecution, war, or violence... and has a well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group."

United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) sponsors World Refugee Day each year on June 20, to raise awareness refugee struggles and to honor the contributions of refugees throughout the world.

Our state's Refugee Services Program, part of the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF), also does tremendous work to help people affected by war, torture, or human rights violations.

How can you participate in World Refugee Day?

Attend a special screening of the inspirational documentary, Refugee Kids: One Small School Takes On the World.

Lantana Road Branch
Thu, Jun 09, 6:00 pm
(561) 304-4500

The Palm Beach County Library System is also proud to take part in the World Refugee Day Celebration and Citizenship Ceremony, presented by the Palm Beach Refugee Task Force and the Dr. Kathryn W. Davis Global Education Center, Palm Beach State College.

Palm Beach State College, Lake Worth Campus Thu, Jun 23, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Other ways to participate:

  • Visit the UNHCR website and the Florida DCF Refugee Services website to donate to and learn more about this local and global crisis.
  • Read a book or watch a film to better understand the experience of a refugee. Visit your local branch library to check out our books with inspiring and compelling stories about "real people with real needs."
  • Wear light blue, the international color of UN aid workers, on the day of the event and let others know why you are wearing this color.
  • Library Adventure Museum Pass 2016

The Palm Beach County Library System is proud to partner with the best museums that the Palm Beaches has to offer: In order to get access to your favorite attractions, please follow these simple instructions:
Each child's Palm Beach County Library System card is eligible to receive one (1) LAMP pass in July. ***All participants must have a child's library card on hand*** when entering the drawing and when picking up your ticket(s).

1.) Please fill out a July LAMP entry form, available at every Palm Beach County Library System children's desk from Sat, Jun 25 - Fri, Jul 01. Your entry will be placed in a drawing to ensure that everyone has an equal chance to get their favorite passes.
2.) If your entry is chosen and you are contacted, please visit the library branch where you submitted your entry between Wed, Jul 06 - Wed, Jul 13 with your child's library card in hand.
3.) All remaining passes will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis (including any museum passes not claimed by the close of business on Wed, Jul 13).

The participating organizations are donating all of the free admissions; in cases where entrance is free, additional benefits are offered to LAMP holders. Please thank them for their generosity when you visit.
