Quickbyte: Khan Academy

The kids are back in school and need all of the support they can get. And maybe this is a good time for YOU to go back to school, too - at least in a virtual way! Khan Academy may be exactly what you need. Khan Academy is a nonprofit organization that provides free, online education to “change education for the better by providing a free world-class education to anyone, anywhere.”

Khan Academy courses are available online and through a free iTunes app (with an Android app in development), so you can learn on the go using video tutorials and interactive exercises. The tutorials are informal in style and organized in 5-20 minute segments so a student can progress from one level to the next while keeping a record of their progress. And to make learning more fun, students can enter contests and earn badges and points along the way.

Currently, Khan Academy offers over 4,800 short videos on a wide range of subjects, ranging from math and science to economics and art history. Always wanted to know more about astronomy, entrepreneurship, or the Renaissance? Need to practice for the SAT? No problem - there are courses on those topics and more. According to the Khan Academy website (as of July 2015), over 580 million lessons have been delivered, with many translated into 36 languages. In fact, there are separate versions of the Khan Academy site for Spanish, French and Brazilian Portuguese learners.

All of the site's resources are available to anyone completely free, so whether you’re 9 or 90, check it out today at www.khanacademy.org.
