Book Life 2015

For people who love books and enjoy experiences that bring books to life.

"The things that make me different are the things that make me." - A.A. Milne

For the second annual Book Life series we have selected eight books which examine the myriad identities that result from our cultures, gender, health status, our place in the family, and our careers. What tensions arise when society doesn’t view us in the same light? The Palm Beach County Library System is proud to partner with area organizations to present this engaging series designed for adults, with some family events too. Discover the eight books that we have selected, and join your neighbors for fun, informative events inspired by the books. The programs and events will be held across the county at different library branches as well as other community locations from August to November.

This series is made possible through the generous support of the Friends of the Palm Beach County Library System, Inc. Please consider joining the Friends.

To register for select off-site events, visit www.pbclibrary.org/book-life one week prior to each event. This year’s Book Life featured books are:

  • "The Hundred-Foot Journey," by Richard C. Morais.
  • "On Immunity," by Eula Biss.
  • "Go Set a Watchman," by Harper Lee.
  • "Still Life with Bread Crumbs," by Anna Quindlen.
  • "The Rosie Effect," by Graeme Simsion.
  • "Frankenstein," by Mary Shelley.
  • "Lovers at the Chameleon Club, Paris 1932," by Francine Prose.
  • "The Martian," by Andy Weir.

Copies of all titles are available in print via our catalog.

Quickbyte: Bonjournal

We discovered Bonjournal when traveling recently, but whether you travel or not, it’s a very useful tool. This free app functions as a simple diary, but with a clean, uncluttered look, offering a platform for recording and sharing your travels, experiences and thoughts.

Using Bonjournal, you can keep a log whether or not you have an Internet connection. There is a title page and place for a photo, which can be changed at anytime. The pages are blank, with space for a title and as much text as you want to write, plus room for three photographs. Since the app syncs to your image folder, it’s easy to find and add photos. There is a place to enter the date and location, and a lock to keep your entries private if desired. And as you add entries, they’ll appear on the title page, creating a table of contents. Add tags to your entries ("restaurants," "scenic drives," or anything else that you can think of) and you’ll be able to find content when you need it.

If you choose to, you can keep your journal private, or share using email, social media, or by sending the url to friends and family. People can "follow" you, and you can "follow" others who share similar interests. Finally, you can download and save your journal as a pdf.

The end result is a simple and clean looking chronicle of your adventures to keep and share. Check Bonjournal out on the web or for free using the app for Android and iOS devices.
