The Friends of the Palm Beach County Library System Present: Presidents and Their First Ladies, Dramatically Speaking: Jerry and Betty Ford

Gerald "Jerry" Ford had one goal - to be elected by his Congressional peers as Speaker of the House of Representatives. Ironically, he did not achieve this dream, but he did become the first unelected vice-president and president of the United States. Ford's honesty and forthrightness helped to heal the nation after the Watergate scandals. His wife, Betty Ford, was maybe our nation's most outspoken first lady and many of the topics she spoke about caused her husband political difficulties, such as her support for ERA and the Roe vs. Wade decision. But her speaking out on her personal difficulties with breast cancer and alcohol and medicinal drug addiction brought these topics to the forefront and saved many people's lives.

The story of Ford's time in the White House with his wife Betty is brought to life by the veteran acting and writing team of husband and wife, William and Sue Wills. Their engaging performance is a "must see" for history buffs, students and anyone interested in human-interest stories. (60 min.)

Quick Byte: Fooducate

Feeling bloated and lethargic after the holidays? Maybe it’s time to begin the new year by living a healthier lifestyle and paying better attention to the food that you eat. Fooducate is a free app that can make it easier to be successful.

Fooducate is a food scanner, tracker and social app that allows you to ask questions, discuss and learn about how to maintain a healthier diet. Even if you’re not trying to lose weight, the app will help you make good decisions on eating right.

Search for foods by entering the product name, or simply scan the barcode. For a traditional search, you’ll see a list of common brands for your particular product, each with a grade ranging from A to D. The grades are based on an algorithm using information available on a product’s packagomg: the nutrition facts panel and the ingredient list. Nutrients, ingredients, category, processing and fortification are all factored into the grade assigned to any food. You also have the option of sharing your opinion of the food, and leaving comments or reviews.

Finally, the food intake tracking tool makes it easy to lose (or gain) weight. Your caloric intake goal can be entered, and the app tracks not only your intake, but also calories burned and calculates how much food you can still take in to stay on track.

Fooducate is available for free for both iOS and Android devices.
