National Italian American Heritage Month
Every year the U.S. president signs an executive order designating the month of October as National Italian American Heritage Month. Coinciding with the festivities surrounding Columbus Day, the proclamation is in recognition of the many achievements, contributions, and successes of Americans of Italian descent, as well as Italians in America.
Over 5.4 million Italians immigrated to the United States between 1820 and 1992. Today there are over 26 million Americans of Italian descent in the United States, making them the fifth largest ethnic group. The country was even named after an Italian, the explorer and geographer Amerigo Vespucci. Celebrate Italian American heritage by attending one of the many programs being offered this month at the Gardens Branch, 11303 Campus Drive, Palm Beach Gardens.* Also, be sure to check your local branch for book displays in recognition of Italian Heritage Month.

Quick Byte: Key Ring
Shopping rewards cards. You know what they are – those little plastic cards that you get when you shop at certain stores. You start out with one, hoping that someday it will give you money back or a discount on your purchase. Then it becomes a collection, and you put them on a keychain. But no doubt, if you have them, you’ve been shopping and realized that the one that you need is hanging from a key chain miles away from where you’re standing.
Help is on the way in the form of Key Ring Loyalty Cards, a free app from Mobestream Media. According to its developers, Key Ring was created to provide people with a hassle-free solution to save time and money while on the go. Key Ring allows you to scan the bar code from each of your cards, add the name of the store or business – then, when you’re shopping, you can pull out your phone, select the store, and scan the image into the store’s code reader. No more jingly key ring weighing down your pocket or purse! If you want, you can also view the store’s weekly ads and coupons. You can manage card information from your mobile device or your computer, and have the ability to sync to new devices as needed. Key Ring has been featured in USA Today, the New York Times, and Entrepreneur Magazine (among others), and is available for free for all major platforms.
If you’d like to find out more about shopping tips and shopping on the Web, the Library will be hosting a program on Online Shopping on Oct 29 at 11:00 am at the Main Library's Computer Center on Summit Blvd. in West Palm Beach. For more information or to preregister, call 561-233-2600 or visit the Information Desk.
