Get Homework Help

Do you ever wish you had your own tutor to consult when you come up against a difficult math homework problem or need help with a writing assignment for English class? Your wish has been granted! Every day students in Palm Beach County are connecting to an expert tutor online at Live Homework Help with the magic of their library cards.

How do they do this? After logging onto the PBCLS website (www.pbclibrary.org), from home or the library, students click on Live Homework Help in the drop-down menu below the Research and Homework icon on the main page. That takes them directly to the tutoring service.

Live Homework Help is available Sunday through Thursday, 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm and Saturday, 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm. It is also available in Spanish, Sunday through Thursday, 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm.

They receive the one-to-one help they need to perform better in school and find the information they need to do their homework in English, Social Studies, Math and Science. Many of the tutors are teachers, professors, graduate students, and engineers. The Live Homework Help service (Tutor.com) conducts a thorough background check before hiring the tutors and reviews them to make sure they are helping students to understand their homework. Students are invited to make comments on their tutoring sessions and Palm Beach County students have responded enthusiastically to the service.

“The help I received today will help me get a better grade on my test.” - 6th grade student

“This site is a lifesaver. I’m so glad it’s available for students.” - 9th grade student.

“Live Homework Help is awesome! I would recommend it to anyone that needs help in school!” - 9th grade student.

Spring into Fall with Financial Planning

Many people think the library's online resources are intended to aid students with their research and homework, but they do more than that. They can assist you with many major decisions in your life. For instance, did you know the library subscribes to a number of online business resources designed to help you with your financial and investment planning? What better time to get your finances in order than now, with plenty of time before the flurry of year-end and tax season?

Check out these online resources:
Valueline, Morningstar, Kroll Bond Ratings, and Mergent Online

  • Kroll Bond Ratings - This service has expert ratings that allow the user to compare the financial health of every FDIC insured bank and savings and loan and every natural-person credit union; including nearly 17,000 domestic and international financial institutions.
  • Mergent Online - One of the most complete online historical financial resource available today, Mergent contains information on over 50,000 companies worldwide, including contact information, executive biographies, financials, histories, stock information, and annual reports.
  • Morningstar - Provides information on over 18,000 stocks and mutual funds and in-depth reports for approximately 4,000 of those by a team of Morningstar analysts, which give up-to-date quantitative and qualitative analyses. Morningstar is designed to provide information to assist investors in making decisions about stocks, funds, industries, and portfolio makeup. This popular resource, previously available in print at your library branch, is now only available electronically, so the library is pleased to offer this access to you!
  • Valueline - Provides a wealth of in-depth financial information, including full-page reviews and incisive analyst commentaries on approximately 1,700 of the most actively traded stocks, in over 90 industries, with historical and current financial results, price and earnings projections, charts, and rankings.
Available in the library and from your home computer with a library card, our electronic resources can help in every step of creating your Financial Plan. If you do not have a library card, you can get a Temporary Research Access Code (TRAC) for immediate access to our online resources. The link to our e-resources is www.pbclibrary.org/online-research.

Quick Byte: PrintFriendly

So you want to print something from the Web, but don’t want all of the advertising and formatting that is included on the page? Because websites are graphically heavy with ads, banners, and images, when you print you often end up with a lot of wasted pages, many of them having single ads on them or just a banner. If you’re like me, to deal with the problem, you might open a Word doc, cut and paste the text into the document, and print. But even then, you don’t always get exactly what you want.

STOP! There’s an easier way to print webpages without wasting ink and paper on all of the clutter. PrintFriendly is a simple to use tool that solves the problem by translating any page into a print version that includes just the content that you want. You have the option of either going to printfriendly.com or installing a shortcut on your toolbar (if you have a website, you can also install a widget for your readers). You simply insert the URL of the page that you want to print, and PrintFriendly rearranges the page in a logical way.

The user has the option of changing the font size and, even though most unwanted content is removed automatically, additional content can still be deleted, including images or complete paragraphs. Just hover over a section; it will become highlighted and a “click to delete” command appears. The page can then be printed, saved as a PDF, or emailed.

Give PrintFriendly a try. It’s an easy-to-use tool that not only saves you paper, ink, and money, but is good for the environment!
