Consumer Reports

Last month we talked about a car repair database that puts repair manuals at your fingertips, on your home or office computer. But if that clunker cant be repaired one more time, and youre shopping for a new or used car, did you know that you have access to all of the resources of Consumer Reports online and right at your fingertips as well?

Consumer Reports is one of our most popular databases. And of course it is not limited to automobile information. Here, you can check reviews, ratings and recom- mendations for any variety of services and products.

With summer upon us, you may be shopping for a new grill for backyard barbecues. Perhaps its time to replace that old lawnmower. Before you head out to Home Depot, head to Consumer Reports to research your options.

If youre planning a summer vacation, Consumer Reports has comparisons of airlines and information about finding lower fares. Other products and services you can review prior to your trip include hotels and restaurants, sporting goods, and walking shoes. Driving to your destination? Maybe you need a GPS. Consumer Reports reviews these, too. Make sure you have good car insurance! Consumer Reports has advice about that.

Watch the video about finding a slimming swimsuit. And if you want to get bathing-suit-ready, Consumer Reports compares diet plans. If you come down with a bug while youre away, Consumer Reports has health information. Research everything from health conditions and medications, to doctors and hospitals, and health insurance.

Now that you know more about the resources available through Consumer Reports, we hope you have an enjoyable summer!

Find Consumer Reports and all of our e-resources at http://www.pbclibrary.org/online-research. Input your library card number to access all of the online resources. Dont have a library card? Sign up now for a Temporary Research Access Code (TRAC) to immediately access most of the librarys electronic resources. Learn more about TRAC at http://edb.pbclibrary.org/TRAC/TRACFAQ.pdf.

Quick Byte: Scratch

Look out Flash, theres a new animator in town. In the past, you needed to be able to write complicated code to make an animation. People made entire careers out of animating little web stories. Simple animation was more complicated than could be imagined, and out of the hands of the everyday user.

Luckily, those days are long gone, and if you want a simple animation, Scratch can fill the gap and save a world of hassle.

Scratch is a user-friendly, animation studio on the Web. With just a few clicks of a button, you can take your ideas and make them a reality. Scratch provides a lot of little images (called sprites) to animate any way you like. If you are not satisfied with what they provide, you can upload your own images. Sprites can have different Costumes or states that you can switch between. This allows you to manage various colors, sizes, and even be invisible.

Once youve decided on a Sprite, you can choose a background. Again, if you are not satisfied you can upload your own, making your presentation very flexible. Now you can start animating! They provide you with multiple movements, changes, and speaking options. All of these can be applied simply by clicking and dragging what you want! The easiest way to learn how to use all of these is following their simple practice animation, found here.

You can add flare to any presentation or help tell stories by adding visual excitement with Scratch. The best part about Scratch is that it is absolutely free! Give Scratch a try today and discover what worlds of animation you can create.
